A widget is merely a tiny piece of PC code or a tiny application that may be inserted into an internet page that performs a certain function or leads to a much bigger application.

It makes it simpler for us non-tech types to get something done on our websites without any bother.

You see them and use them all of the time, without relising it. A widget can be : selection boxes, buttons, dialog boxes, toggle switches,, popup windows, forms, stock quotes, search boxes for Google, stories, clocks,, games, feeds, counters and many a lot more.

If you're a wordpress user, you hear the term widget all of the time. A widget in WP lets you add tools or content on the side bars of you blog.

One caution nonetheless is that before you can use a Widget, you should ensure you have a widget enabled theme.

If you examine the directions of a theme it will tell you if it is widget enabled. This document is not going to go into all of the details here about installing and using widgets.

A widget isn't an extension and an enhancement isn't a widget.

Regard it this way : a widget does something in your sidebar, an enhancement is affecting your full blog.

So placing an automatic responder sign up form in your side bar is done with a widget.

A product like "All In One S.E.O " is an extension as it is affecting the S.E.O of your full site. If you go to this webpage : http://wordpress.org / extend / enhancements / and look on the left side column you'll find many widgets and extensions with ratings from other wordpress users. If there are a few things you wish to do to your blog you may find a widget or an extension to do it. Most blog writers use widgets, there is, however, plenty of discourse about if you should or not, how many, and which of them.

This call truly comes down to what are you attempting to do with your blog? You've got to think about form, function and who is your audience.
